What hazards are associated with a spillage?

• Slip hazard for people and fork lift trucks.
• Dust particles from powders may be breathed in.
• Burns from corrosives.
• Fire risk from flammable vapours of liquids or dust particles of powders
• Skin absorption of toxic liquids.
• Inhalation of corrosive or toxic gases given off from substance.
• Fire/explosion risk of flammable gases given off from substance.
• Damage to equipment or surfaces by substance – especially corrosives.
• Environmental impact – leaking into drains or waterways.

How would you recognise dangerous/hazardous goods?

• Diamond shaped labels on the packages
• Square, orange coloured labels with pictures of nature of hazard.

How can your company prevent spillages?

• Handle packages with care
• Do not place liquid based items on moving machinery.
• Do not place dangerous goods on the machinery.
• Take extra care when lifting pallets with the fork lift – Do not pierce packages.
• Ensure pallets of drums/bottles are shrink wrapped before moving them.
• Ensure drums/bottles/dangerous goods are shrink wrapped on pallets on vehicles.

What other action could be taken if the goods were unsafe?

• Evacuate your premises.
• If safe to do so, obtain information on the nature of the substance for emergency services
• Prevent spillage from entering drains – if safe to do so.
• Inform your Health, Safety & Environmental department.
