Compactors

Compactors are a common machine found around loading bays where the compression of waste cardboard and shrink-wrap is needed. Compactors assist with recycling of cardboard and plastic by reducing the amount of space taken up by rubbish in landfills by crushing debris together into a large block. While these machines are convenient and easy to use, there have been fatal accidents concerning compactors. Following some basic safety procedures can help prevent accidents from occurring.

As an employer you should:
  • Inspect all baling and compacting machines periodically to ensure that all safety features are functioning properly;
  • Develop, implement and enforce a baling/compacting machine safety safe system of work;
  • Provide training and ensure that employees, including management personnel, know and understand the importance of baler safety features and how they work, and that authorised operators follow the standard safety operating operating procedures and;
  • Follow the manufacturer’s recommended schedule for baling machine maintenance.
Additionally, the baling machine manufacturer should:
  • Ensure that baler operating manuals have clear guidelines relating to safety interlocks.
